Important Message For Everyone
Hello everyone,
At some time today (possible tomorrow) I will be posting assignments for students in all of my Social Studies Classes. Before I do I want you to hear a few things from me:
I genuinely hope that everyone is well. Having 2 high school aged children, I realize fully that these are challenging times for teenagers. This is not the scenario that anyone could have predicted at the beginning of the year. You should be engaged in “normal” teenage activities. For many that would mean school, part-time work, perhaps sports or more artistic commitments - and probably lots of regular social interaction with friends and family. Sadly, all of this has been temporally put on hold.
I want you to know that I realize that many of you may have things going on in your life that take precedence over on-line learning – I get that! The assignments that I will provide are intended to serve as a healthy way to regain a level of normalcy. I hope that you find the assignments interesting. Do your best, feel free to be creative, take chances and do not stress. As you know your marks will not go down – they can only go up! I am empathetic to the overall demands placed on students at this time. I want you highly engaged and I will mark accordingly. At this point I do not intend to do any on-line lessons in real time. I am waiting to see what level of student engagement I have before I plan details for future units.
A reminder that this website will be the primary platform that I will use to communicate with you. If you need to get in touch with me please email me at ftorres@sd44.ca. Please feel free to contact me whenever you wish. I will be available. If you haven't been in touch with me yet please take a moment to reach out. It will be nice to say hi and hear how you are doing.
Looking forward to hearing from you.
Stay tuned for specific course instructions.

Active Living 11/12 - 2 week 20 minute daily work-out
Hi everyone,
I wanted to let you know what the short term plan is moving forward. For the the reminder of the year we will be focusing on the Big Idea that physical activity is an important part of overall health and well-being. More than ever exercise should be central to our physical and mental health.
Your assignment - which you can start immediately - is to complete a daily 20 minute work-out. You will need a stop-watch for this work-out. The workout sheet is located on the side up my website in the Active Living 11/12 tab. You will notice that there is a self evaluation and goal setting question on the second page. This inquiry portion of the assignment should be completed after each work-out and will hopefully serve to assess and motivate you.
Due April 24th. Please send a document to me at ftorres@sd44.ca
Do your best. Remember your mark can't go down- it can only go up!
I have added 2 videos to my website. The first video demonstrates a few of the exercises that you will be asked to perform. The second video is a light look at how you can stay active a home. Please have a look at those as well.
Let me know if you have any questions,
Take care and keep active!

A Message To All Students And Parents
Good morning,
I hope that everyone is well. I thought it would be helpful to give you an update regarding what "Continuity of Learning" means and course expectations moving forward. This week will focus on defining our new normal - creating systems and structures. I ask that you remain patient as we all learn to adapt to the new education delivery model.
Remember that as of now this blog/website will be my only platform to deliver content to students. All students will be aware of their first assignment by April 10th. Moving forward I will strive to have supplementary subject resources on my website based on the following weekly schedule:
Monday - Message to all students
Tuesday - Social Studies 10
Wednesday- Genocide Studies
Thursday - History 12
Friday - Active Living
If you know of any of your friends who are not in the 'loop" regarding my website, please let them know that information for my classes will be located here. Also, please take a moment to reach out to me via email to check in. I'm curious to see what type of engagement I am going to get and it will be nice to say hi...
All students in my Social Studies classes will be working on inquiry based unit assignments that will focus on the "Big Ideas", key concepts and content related to specific courses. Details for the first assignment will be provided to all students by April 10th, but here are some examples of the essential questions that will be explored in my classes:
SS10 - World War Two was described as a "Total War". Assess how WW2 and the current pandemic
relate to the concept of total war.
Genocide Studies - Students will explore the Nuremberg Trials and be asked to reflect on what justice looks like after a genocide?
History 12 - After WW2 the world would experience a wide range of international cooperation. To what extent did the international community effectively cooperated after the Second World War? You should make reference to the current global pandemic.
Stay tuned for more details in regards to these essential questions.
Active Living - Your assignment will be to work out!! You will be asked to complete a work-out/self assessment journal.
Please note that if you have a "Passion Project" that interests you and fits the Big Ideas connected to your course, I am more than open to considering alternate assignments. If it keeps you engaged in your own learning, go for it! My ask is that you run the assignment by me first.
Looking forward to hearing from everyone.
