History 12 Information For This Week

Hello everyone,

A follow up to last week:
To help you with the question about suppressing voting today:

Many America states have introduced voter registration laws that require voters to present government issued ID such as drivers licenses prior to voting. While this may seem reasonable it can be used to discriminate against groups like blacks and Mexican Americans because they are less likely to have this type of ID.

In addition, Trump is trying to limit mail in ballots in upcoming elections.  This is seen by many as another example

Also, something called gerrymandering is cynical and a undemocratic. Look that up.

This week we will explore a few more recent high profile instances of racial unrest in the United States

Please watch each of the following videos and complete a SIT (Surprising/Interesting/Troubling) chart for each:

Active Living information for this week

Good morning everyone,

Your final significant assignment, in terms of letter grade, for this year will be to create your own work-out routine.  The hope is that you will be able to use fitness information that you have learned from this course (and other sources) to create a fitness routine that implements F.I.T.T. principles.  This could/should be something that you will continue to do - and build upon - during the summer vacation and in to the future.

The FITT Principle (or formula) is a great way of monitoring your exercise program. The acronym FITT outlines the key components, or training guidelines, for an effective exercise program, and the initials F, I, T, T, stand for: Frequency, Intensity, Time and Type.
  • Frequency: refers to the frequency of exercise undertaken or how often you exercise.
  • Intensity: refers to the intensity of exercise undertaken or how hard you exercise.
  • Time: refers to the time you spend exercising or how long you exercise for.
  • Type: refers to the type of exercise undertaken or what kind of exercise you do.

Criteria:

1. Create a work-out journal (you can use my previous assignment hand-out as a template) that incorporates at least 9-12 different exercises. You must  design a workout that consists of exercises that combine strength, flexibility and cardio.  Where necessary you may have to provide a description of the exercise that explains proper technique.

2. Include a section that allows you to address the daily self refection.  For example, you should be able to indicate how you felt about the work-out?  Did you meet your goals? Were you less motivated?  Did you feel really good about the work-out?

3.  Provide a self Assessment that indicate the grade you think you deserve for this assignment and why?  Perhaps address FITT principles, level of variety, level of difficulty etc

You have the green light to include runs, biking, pick-up games as a daily work-out.  However, you should also incorporate strength and flexibility into your weekly routine

History 12 Course Information for This Week

Good morning everyone,

This week we will look at the US Civil Rights Movement

Please start by looking at the following test:

https://drive.google.com/file/d/1Cvq94hW04GNTR1SRRhmZPAnNziRWU7YW/view?usp=sharing

Q. Do you know what it is?....

It's a literacy test used by the state of Alabama to determine if African Americans were "smart" enough to vote...
You probably realized that white people didn't have yo take this test.  It was a form voter suppression used by several states to prevent blacks from voting.
Q.  Can you think of any current measures that are being used in the United States to suppress certain groups from voting?

SS 10 Course Information for this Week

Hello everyone,

First of all, Thanks to those of you that have completed the inquiry Project.  Well done!
I will begin marking ASAP.

This week we will look at the topics of Canadian autonomy (independence) and identity.
You will be ask to consider what it means to be a Canadian?

Let's start with something light.  Please watch the following video: What are some beliefs or stereotypes about Canadians?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OIaBd1-LsLs

A major theme in this course is the evolution of Canada as a British colony to an autonomous nation that has become respected on the world stage;

Have a look at the following Power Point that deals with Canada's Growing Independence

https://drive.google.com/file/d/1vBBLtFJ6uO8FjMP5gCWKfbucPPL2eLHx/view

Here is the supporting hand-out:

https://drive.google.com/file/d/1_i_M6LqDl8saaR9di_g7H5fawyZvlnfL/view

This following Power Point with give you a few more examples of important events that have contributed to autonomy:

https://drive.google.com/file/d/1bJYQuQ-7Az3vyZe_msQoUn50ucy85jNU/view

Canada has evolved into a major player on the world scene.  We are a country that is generally respected on the international level. As you know, we are a multicultural nation with a Charter of Rights and Freedoms that protects the liberties of our citizens at home.  We are a country with a strong human rights record, and we have intervened on multiple occasions when war and even genocide have threaten other nations ie Egypt and Rwanda.  We have developed our own unique identity.

Watch the following video on Canadian identity:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_PzlASOEwDA

Assignment: One page written response

What does it mean to be a Canadian?  What is Canadian identity?  You should reference information from the Power-Point lessons in addition to your own feelings on this topic.

Genocide Studies Information For This Week

Hello Everyone,

I'm posting this information a day earlier as I am super busy tomorrow and I want to make sure that I stay on top of course work, meetings, marking etc.

This week we will look at the International Criminal Court.

After the Nuremberg trials, a need arose for a permanent International Criminal Court (ICC).  160 nations would meet in Rome to discuss an international court independent of the United Nations - the result would be the Rome Statute

Please read the following and answer the questions at the end:

https://drive.google.com/file/d/1rwUOh5umsAS_lcIuI6u1TcZpmUVAt6ID/view

One of the problems that exists with the I.C.C. is that many important and powerful nations -l ike the USA, China and Russia - have not ratified the Rome Statute, which means thses nations are allowed to participate only when they wish.  in other words, if one of their citizens is charged by the ICC, these nations are not compelled to take part in the legal process.  The ICC will never charge Donald Trump, Xi Jinping, or Vladimir Putin.  Can you see how this would be controversial???

Please have a look at the following website which provides a short video and useful information on the ICC

http://www.coalitionfortheicc.org/fr/node/259

To summarize what you need to do:

1. Read the handout and answer supporting question

2.  Watch the short video on the ICC and explore the website.

That's it for this week...

Take care
