History 12 Course informations for this week

Hi everyone,

The sense that I am getting from students and staff is that many of you are feeling slightly overwhelmed with the work-load.  With this in mind I have intentionally given you a relatively light week.  You will simply be asked to go over a few Powerpoint presentations and Hand-0uts.  you will also be asked to watch a few short videos.  There will be no formal "homework' assignment due next week.

Preamble:

Remember, The big picture concept that we are working on is international cooperation since WW2 - To what extent does it exist?  This is your inquiry project question

Brinksmanship - the practice of pursuing a dangerous policy to the limits of safety before stopping - would be implemented by both the United States and the Soviet Union.

Peaceful Coexistence - The belief, initiated by the Soviet Union, that peace between the Soviet Union and United States was possible.

Today we are going to study three tense events during the Cold War; The U2 incident (1960),  the Cuban Missile Crisis (1962) and the Space Race.

The Cold War would see humanity come dangerously close to WW3 - this was particularly the case during the Cuban Missile Crisis.  At the same time there was a glimmer of hope for peace and cooperation, as evidenced by establishment of the "hotline" between the White House and the Kremlin, and by the joint Soviet/US space flights in the 1970's.

Here is what you need to do:

Go to the History 12 Hand-Outs tab and go over the following:
1.  Cuban Missile Crisis PP
2. CMC handout
3. Sputnik/U2 PP
4. Sputnik/U2 hand-out

Go to the History Videos tab and watch the following:
1. The CMC
2. The History of the CMC
3. The U2 incident
4. the Space Race

Remember, you do not have formal homework, but i suggest you start keeping track of good examples of when cooperation Did and Did Not occur.

Have a nice weekend.
