History 12 Course Information for this week

Good morning everyone,

This week we will look at The Vietnam War;  a proxy war that connects to key cold war concepts like containment and the domino theory.  The Vietnam War started as an internal dispute between Communist North Vietnam versus South Vietnam - a nation supported by the capitalist and democratic United States.

During this conflict, which was officially known as a "police action", the United States would intervene unilaterally in what was essentially a civil war.  Most nations did not support American involvement in the Vietnam War - the UN refused to send Peacekeeper to the region.  Not surprisingly, American leaders were criticized by many for hiding their true intentions; stopping the spread of communism.  Opposition to the Vietnam would polarize the American public.  Much like today, Americans were divided in the opinion of the government.

For me, the Vietnam War represents a loss of innocence for the average American.  Prior to this conflict, most Americans trusted their elected officials - Vietnam would help to create a public that became highly critical of political and military leadership.  This skepticism remains today...

Big questions to consider for this topic:

Is it ever appropriate to intervene in another nations internal disputes?
At what point is it necessary for a democratic governments to shut down political protests?

As the War progressed,  many American politicians realized that they needed to increase military involvement in Vietnam.  However, public support was lacking as most Americans were largely unaware or apathetic to what was going on in Vietnam.  Justification was needed to the escalate troop involvement in Vietnam; that excuse came with the sinking of an American battle ship called the U.S.S. Maddox.
