SS 10 Course Information for this Week

Hello everyone,

First of all, Thanks to those of you that have completed the inquiry Project.  Well done!
I will begin marking ASAP.

This week we will look at the topics of Canadian autonomy (independence) and identity.
You will be ask to consider what it means to be a Canadian?

Canada has evolved into a major player on the world scene.  We are a country that is generally respected on the international level. As you know, we are a multicultural nation with a Charter of Rights and Freedoms that protects the liberties of our citizens at home.  We are a country with a strong human rights record, and we have intervened on multiple occasions when war and even genocide have threaten other nations ie Egypt and Rwanda.  We have developed our own unique identity.

Assignment: One page written response

What does it mean to be a Canadian?  What is Canadian identity?  You should reference information from the Power-Point lessons in addition to your own feelings on this topic.

This is a three week work-out due Friday May 15th   Please make sure that you complete the journal.  Make sure that you complete a self assessment reponse.  Please indicate the percentage mark that you think you deserve for this unit. 

Also, a reminder that everyone needs to check in with me for attendance via email on a weekly basis, otherwise you will be marked "D" (disengaged).  I have not heard from some of you this week.

FYI  - your progress will also be sent home to your parents with a interim report next week week.

Genocide Studies Information For This Week

Hello Everyone,

I'm posting this information a day earlier as I am super busy tomorrow and I want to make sure that I stay on top of course work, meetings, marking etc.

This week we will look at the International Criminal Court.

After the Nuremberg trials, a need arose for a permanent International Criminal Court (ICC).  160 nations would meet in Rome to discuss an international court independent of the United Nations - the result would be the Rome Statute

One of the problems that exists with the I.C.C. is that many important and powerful nations -l ike the USA, China and Russia - have not ratified the Rome Statute, which means thses nations are allowed to participate only when they wish.  in other words, if one of their citizens is charged by the ICC, these nations are not compelled to take part in the legal process.  The ICC will never charge Donald Trump, Xi Jinping, or Vladimir Putin.  Can you see how this would be controversial???

SS 10 Information for this week

This week will be set aside for you to work on your Total War inquiry project.  Remember that you should compare and contrast societal intervention during WW2 to the COVID  19 pandemic.

Due May 12th

My preference would be to receive this assignment as a Power Point presentation.  I have already received a few assignments from students.  They look great!

Important History 12 New Project Due Date May 14th

I have decided to extend the Inquiry Project Due Date to May 14th.  This new due date will allow us to cover a few more topics related to International Cooperation.

So what this means is that on Thursday May 7th I will provide lesson information related to instances of international cooperation.  You will then have an additional week to complete the project.
