SS 10 Lesson Information for This Week

Good morning,

I hope everyone is well,

Before I provide lesson information for this week I wanted to remind you of a couple things:

1.  The Total War inquiry project outline is located under the SS 10 hand-outs tab.

2.  Additional background course information was provided on a post that was shared on April 9th.

Lesson Information for this week:

Preamble: One of the most, if not most important, function of government is to provide safety for its citizens.

This week we will be looking at the implementation of the War Measures Act by Prime Minister Pierre Elliott Trudeau - yes,  that is Justin Trudeau's dad - during the October 1970 October Crisis.

Background information.

From 1930-1970 Quebec would be dramatically transformed.  Quebec would change from being a traditional and relatively backwards province into a modern province with a strong desire for self government.  Many Quebecois grew increasingly frustrated with English speaking dominance over the predominantly French speaking province.  With this,  a new peaceful separatist (wanting to separate from Canada) movement gained popularity in Quebec.  Unfortunately, a more radical and violent movement would also become a reality in Quebec;  The Front de Liberation du Quebec (FLQ) was a terrorist group that kidnapped and murdered in the name of Quebec independence.

The Prime Minister of Canada - Pierre Elliott Trudeau - would make the unprecedented decision to invoke the War Measure Act to increase the power of the federal government, in an attempt to safeguard citizens from a terrorist organization.  Using the War Measures Act would limit civil liberties (your rights) because the government could do things like arrest you and put you in jail for 90 days without pressing charges.  It was a very controversial move by a government during times of peace!

So here is what you need to do this week:

Go to the SS 10 Handouts tab
1. Go over Quebec Nationalism PP
2. Complete October Crisis questions

Go to the SS 10 Videos tab
3.  Complete a New/ interesting chart while watching October Crisis video

New
Interesting

4.  Watch the "W5 October Crisis 50 Years Later" video.  Answer the following question:
Who was the FLQ and what did they want?

5.  Complete a Surprising/Interesting/Troubling chart while watching Pierre Trudeau -"Just watch me"

Surprising Interesting Troubling

6.  Answer the following short answer.
Do you think Pierre Trudeau was justified to use the War Measures Act during the FLQ crisis?

Active Living 11/12 Course Information

Hello everyone,

A couple things:

1.  A reminder that your first assignment ( located on my website) is due April 24th.  You can submit this to me via email at ftorres@sd44.ca

This 20 minute work-out follows the F.I.I.T. principle

Frequency
Intensity
Time
Type of Exercise

2.  Establishing routines.  It is really important to make physical activity a priority in your life.  This benefits physical and mental health.  There are many times when work-outs do not occur because we get caught up with the hectic pace of life.  Establishing daily routines that make physical fitness a priority will help you to ensure that you stay active.  I suggest that you set a daily time to get your work out in. For me earlier in the day is better than later.  I get my work -out  "out of the way" and I usually feel the great - thank you endorphins...

3.  Work Out Journal.  Work out journals are a great way to keep you on tack and motivate you.  I use my school agenda book as a journal for mountain biking.  I like to track which trails I rode and how long it took me to finish the ride.  I find that journals help to motivate me especially if I see a few blank dates in the calendar.  This is often enough for me to get out and enjoy the trails.

History 12 Course Information For This Week

Hi everyone,

I hope all is well.  I have already received quite a few inquiries about the term project.  Thanks to those of you who have reached out! A reminder to everyone to please get in touch with me asap.

I am going to provide you with quite a bit of lesson material for this week.  This content will help you to start thinking about assessing the level of international cooperation that existed during the early days of the Cold War.

Remember to always keep in mind the main question: To what extent has the international community effectively cooperated after the Second World War?

Things to do:

*Go to the History 12 Handouts tab located at the side of my website and go over the following:

A.  Cold Overview 1945-70 Power Point
B.  Berlin Handout
C.  Berlin P.P.
D.  Korea Handout
E.   Korea P.P.

*Go to History 12 Videos tab located at the right side of my website and watch these videos.  Please note that they are located approximately half way down the list

A.  Cold War Crash Course
B.  The Berlin Wall
C.  Korea War for dummies

Now, here is your assignment which will be due Thursday April 23 .  You have one week to do this so it shouldn't be too difficult.

You have 3 tasks: (5 marks each)

1. For each video you should complete a New/Interesting Chart

New
Interesting

2.  Cold War Terms -  This handout is also located under the History 12 Handout tab

3.  Answer the following short answers (1/2 page each)

a.  Q. Why did the city of Berlin become the symbol of the Cold War?

b.  America claimed support of South Korea was based on "Collective Security".  This refers to the United Nations principle of common action against an aggressor.  Critics of American involvement in the Korea War suggest that the United States intervened in Korea because of the policy of "containment", which was fuelled by distrust and fear of communism.

     Q.  To what extent was American involvement in the Korean War based on self interest?

Remember you are always welcome to get in touch with me via email.  I will get back to you as soon as I can.
